WHat I have found is that the shocks fail gradually over time.
once the rear shocks fail, the car will feel quite unstable over bumps in the road, you will feel the rear end shimmy and shifting. It's quite disturbing.
And I have found that for me, the front shock just sort of gradually loose effectiveness. There seems to be enough friction in the suspension that a "bounce test" like in the old days is just not effective.
I'd be really surprised if your front shocks are performing well after 154k mis. The OEM Sachs are quite good and long lived ... but not *that* long lived, I dont think.
