I had tried previously to check the mirror for delamination of the glass from the supporting structure to no avail. It felt secure.
So after checking the WIS I attacked the mirror assembly assuming the internal mounts had loosened. Nope! It was exactly what you described and what I had happen to our '87 Astro van nearly thirty years ago.
Using a plastic pry tool to pry on the mirror base to expose the wire anchoring clip behind it, reveled the thin glass was shearing free from the rubber & plastic base which hold it. In my earlier attempts I was grabbing this rubber & plastic base plate with my fingers, rather than just the thin glass, which is why it felt secure.
I applied a bead of black Sealastic all around the perimeter of the base plate with an X across the middle and all should be well after it cures.
So I was able to avoid the cost of a new mirror piece - twice! With the old Astro van the glass fell off into my open hand while driving down a city street when I was checking it for adherence.
