So the saab (HK) amp takes 4 pre-amp inputs. It expects full spectrum audio to each. The amp then filters these inputs and sends midrange and high frequency to the 4 cabin speakers, and the low frequency to the sub. (based on the sound quality of my '00 and '01 HK systems, I'd say it does this filtering and crossover quite well, and matched to the speakers). FWIW the head unit in the '08 is pretty crappy and the sound was never even close to what I get from the '00 and '01)
Anyway, head unit has 5 pre-amp outputs ... 4 cabin speakers and a sub. The head unit was already filtering the cabin speakers and so the amp was only getting mid-and high freqs. It simply had nothing to send to the sub.
I wired that sub output to the rear speak input on the amp... and voila, the sub came to life.
I'll write the details of this adventure once I have steering wheel controls working
