Help -- Electrical Gremlin

My 2006 9-5 2.3 sport sedan is a beauty, but now beset with a vexing problem. I first noticed that the electrical windows would sometimes not operate, but it was an intermittent problem and the car would otherwise drive OK. Then I discovered that when this issue occurred the turn signals would also not operate nor the headlights or taillights (obviously I had not driven at night where the lack of lights would be apparent). But again, the car would always start and drive normally.
I learned what prompted this issue: turning the AC on coldest position and blowers running max speed. By turning up the AC to a warmer setting, then the missing turn signals, lights, and window functions would return. You could reproduce the issue sitting in driveway. With the transmission in park and AC set to normal everything would work. But, and this is where it gets interesting, when you shifted to reverse the problems would come back.
The battery is one year old and the car has always started easily. Before I got the battery a mechanic had checked the cables and pronounced them ok. I have read here where the ignition switch might be the culprit, but given its cost is there any way to diagnose this issue with certainty?
Thanks, in advance, for your advice and assistance!
