Engine Knock. V6

My SAAB has an unusual issue. The engine makes dull knocking sound when idling, much like a lifter. It's been doing this for a few months and hasn't worsened. The interesting part is the noise goes away when the automatic transmission is in-gear. I had a mechanic listen to it (non-SAAB) and the Guy said it's for sure piston slap. Could it somehow be related to the transmission or with loading the rotating assemblies?
I said it was strange. Thanks!
