If I understand correctly you have:
- confirmed that pink is shorted to ground
- confirmed that the pink wire is connected to the taillight assembly
I dont have the wiring diagram however I assume that pink is supposed to carry 12v when you turn on the headlight switch. If so your job is to find where that short to ground is.
I agree that suspecting the mounting points are likely culprits. I'd also take a hard look at any connector(even though failures at a connector usually fail open) and also check junctions if there are any in the path (even though these usually fail as high resistance or fully open).
I'd also consider the lamp assembly itself. You say you have continuity from pink to the assembly ... but to rule out the assembly I'd also check continuity to ground from various points on the assembly itself, starting from where pink arrives.
