This is as far as I got. My pot wires were all in tact w/o any abnormalities.I did not see the need to go any further, buy temptation was there for sure.
I assume to remove the shaft with small carbon disk/pot is to split open that 90 deg metallic arm from the other side that is attached/wedged to the shaff. You also have to remove two screws/bolts that hold butterfly and remove butterfly itself. From what I saw, small disk/pot is one assy with the shaft and only would come out through the side on your illustration.
If I were to split it, I would then tap threads in the shaft and use pan head screw with washer and some locktite to hold that arm in place.
Wires with you condition I would use a 3/16 Teflon snake spiral that is often used in Aviation aircraft maintenance, if you Google, you'll see what I am referring to. Please see below.
