I don't know the answer to your question.

I do know I replaced a power steering pump on a 9-5 (noise) at about 220,000 miles where the metal hose got damaged down by the union between the front and rear hoses, and was run a few minutes with a very low fluid level (replaced with a brand new pump) but the noise was not eliminated - only diminished by maybe half. I figured what the heck so I also replaced the original water pump with new - minimal change, at least in terms of noise I think - wish I had used a dB meter to actually measure the noise level.

I too am wondering if there's some air in the PS line, causing cavitation or something, but I've put another 13,000 miles on it and nothing else has come of it. Maybe someone can throw some light on to both your situation and mine.
