Thank you all, this is very helpful.
I'm starting with my '08 SC, 174k mi. last summer, after the car was sitting for about 1 month, the AC was blowing warm air. Air distribution was working correctly, there were no ACC Codes. The compressor was not coming on at all, and of course no cool air.
I put some refrigerant in and the system came to life . That is when I took the car to the local garage. They found 2 leaks, one on the compressor and one at at the low pressure fill valve. They fixed that and the AC was cold for ~6-8 months and eventually became non functional again, with the same symptoms. adding refrigerant again brought it back to life. I did notice some green liquid when I removed the low side dust cap.
Right now blindly recharging seems to last 2 or 3 weeks.
I could take it back to the local guy but I'd rather not. Im sure that his repair last year was fine, and this is a new leak. I'd prefer to do this myself.
Tools I have on hand:
- Tech 2
- nice manifold gauge set (Yellow jacket)
So my next step is *I think* to hunt down the current leak. The UV dye and light is reasonably priced. The sniffers range from $30 to $400.
I'll start with UV and see if I can find anything. If not I'll order a sniffer.
so next tool purchase:
- UV leak detector (dye, LED light, etc)
- possibly r134a sniffer.
after the leak is found (and hopefully repaired) then what? can I evacuate the system myself? I see a few vacuum pumps but I presume that they vent r134a into the atmosphere. Of course I am already venting a few ozs a week ....
