I have a 2003 and self installed a CD changer years ago (dealer performed the matrimonies). Can’t say I have had any issue with it being a drain. Yes, opening the hatch results in the cassette ejecting, but that’s on demand.
Other than the black cover and exposure to UV I can’t imagine why the heat signature would be high there. Maybe remove the cassette and see what happens over time?
