Don't know about a Saab but sometimes latches have a manual release built into them - it might even be a safety requirement. Now that the pull handle system is in place, it may take over that function. have you pulled hard enough on the plastic handle? Can you follow the release pull to the latch and yank it from a closer proximity to the switch? I guess one of the lessons learned is that we should all check the operation of the release every few years to make sure it's still working.
