Maybe I got dumb lucky, after all the key was only briefly submerged. Maybe I did all the steps necessary to bring it back to life. Steps were:
- Remove battery cover
- Remove battery
- Remove transponder (it pushes out by pressing any of the buttons)
- Remove silicone button cover from transponder
- Remove mylar sheet from inside of button cover
- Dry everything with soft tissues
- Use blow-dryer on low heat to dry transponder
- Place transponder inside small sealed bag with desiccant, I repurposed a small Silica Gel packet.
- Wait 24 hours
- Clean transponder with Circuit Board Cleaner
- Install new battery
- Cross all flexible appendages while hoping and praying
Immediately following every new battery installation the only button on the key head that will work is the Trunk Release. Don't panic when Unlock and Lock do not initially respond, they should after using Trunk Release.
See photo below of all the pieces following disassembly. (The mylar sheet is back in the silicone button cover) The clipped corner of the transponder will prevent you from reassembling in reverse.
