Yes, the screwdriver has too low torque for that.
For unscrewing stubborn small screws impact screwdriver is best solution - the only one that will not damage the screw head. When you hit this tool with a hammer, it rotates about small angle while acting with impact force on the screw head what loosens joint tension. It's totally different from impact gun which makes only torque pulses. It's very effective. I use it for brake disc index screws, or screws keeping the starter solenoid.
Crucial is to clean and degrease the screw head to avoid bit slipping. Dirty oiled heads usually are the main reason of screw damage, especially the ones with internal drive socket (Allen, Torx, spline), like in case of famous lower alternator bolt ;) Dental tools are very helpful in cleaning the dirty socket in the screw heads (and also for many other thing like O-rings removal).
Below links for expensive and cheap impact screwdrivers. In this case cheap ones usually also work fine. I recommend to buy one with 1/2" square drive and 5/16" bits.

Remember to use proper torque when installing small screws - usually people are tightening them too much, so here standard screwdriver is fine, as it's hard to overtighten with it.
