Coolant Bypass Hose - Refresh my memory please Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 16 Apr 2021 07:35:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
2008 9-5 with MacKay Hose Set installed
For the past few weeks I have received "Coolant Low" messages on the SID. Each time the coolant level is about a 1/4-inch below the mid-body joint of the coolant bottle. Each time I have topped it off and have become more concerned as the string of alarms continues.
Last week I saw two 4-inch diameter wet spots on the concrete where the car was parked nose down and backwards in our drive when making repeated trips for yard mulch. Yesterday I saw a long narrow wet spot beneath the car after a light rain, and was pretty certain it was not rain related because too much of the remaining under car area was dry. I then suspected one of the clamps on the MacKay hose set was loose and would only need to be tightened.
Well....half right.
I just came into the house from inspecting the car in the driveway and found the lower hose clamp at the firewall loosened enough to slip completely off the hose. It is now tight against the firewall encircling only the metal tube the hose connects to. The hose is still connected, miraculously, but appears to have significantly shifted toward the engine.
The solution is obvious. Loosen the hose clamp further, slide the hose further onto the tube, slide the clamp back onto the hose, then tighten it adequately.
Where I need the refresher is in what must be removed to access this area. I installed this hose set 5-6 years ago so my memory is a little foggy. What I remember is:
1 - Remove plastic engine/throttle body cover
2 - Remove charge air inlet tube from Throttle Body. (I have spare O-ring for re-installation)
3 - Remove plastic cover off an electrical connection box on firewall, then remove the anchoring nut and support clip so the connection box can be removed.
Anything else?
I may need to open the electrical connections in the box too to remove it, this I can't remember.
I am going to wait a couple more hours for the temperature to climb above 50-degrees before I start this.
Wow! Am I ever lucky that hose didn't pop-off its metal tube during one of my recent long drives! It appears to barely be connected.
