Replaced head unit (AS3 system), rear shelf speakers don’t work

Got the dreaded radio code request (03 9-5 sedan) so I just installed a new single DIN Pioneer head unit (DEH-S6220BS). I tried to make sure the new radio had the correct # of pre-outs, and I connected everything (ie, there are no unconnected or loose wires remaining), but now there is no sound coming from the 2 Harman Kardon speakers on the rear shelf. The other speakers are working fine.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this? I’m at a loss. I’ve tried changing the head unit software options (toggled the subwoofer setting on and off, faded the sound to the rear, switching from network to standard settings, and more). Also considered that maybe those speakers were already dead, or that new head unit (which was an open box product) is faulty.
The sound is OK as is, but it would be nice to get it all working again. Thanks for any help brainstorming this problem!
