I replaced one this summer on a 2009 combi. In my opinion it is important to keep the heat off the spare tire which would deteriorate over time without the shield. I don’t try to second guess the engineers who designed the car. Actually the nuts are not the problem because they are stamped nuts and will come off readily. I just used a small ratchet. The real risk is breaking off one of the studs the nuts thread onto. They rust and need to be handled with great care. I wire-brushed the studs after removing the nuts and sprayed them with some water-resistant lubricant. As you probably noticed, the aluminum heat shield corrodes and disintegrates around the nuts making the holes larger until the nuts will no longer hold the shield. The heat shield and nuts are available and should be replaced. At least in my area, that heat shield gets a lot of salt in the winter.
