That sounds like a pretty extreme first step. Losing both fluids doesn’t mean they are necessarily related by default.
Are you seeing any evidence of the fluids co-mingling? Coolant in the oil? My guess is not, as you would notice that when checking oil and coolant levels.
You can purchase a test that tests for the presence of exhaust gasses in the coolant reservoir, which could give a clue about the state of the HG.
You can do a pressure test on the cooling system to look for small leaks.
Over the years I have had very slow coolant leaks, undetectable seepage that result in occasional top-up messages. Similarly, I go through about 1/3 to 1/2 qt of oil every 5,000 miles (between changes). That likely is just due to the age and mileage of the car (in my case 19 years, 304,000 miles).
I would certainly do more investigation before jumping into a HG
