Shark Fin - Can I just remove it entirely?

Did a search here and have read through a number of threads discussing replacing the sharkfin, but havent found the answer to my question, so please forgive yet another thread on this issue.
Have an 02 9-5 wagon, and broke off the sharkfin with the garage door. It still is attached by its wiring.
From what I have read the sharkfin is solely for the obsolete OnStar and not am/fm, given that it is obsolete, can I just cut the wires, isolate and tape each off, then just put a dummy antenna with marine caulk in its place?
The question comes from having read that doing this would cause constant error codes as the antenna has a monitored termination in it circuitry.
I need to fix this ASAP as bad weather is on its way again to us here in the NorthEast and I dont want to risk water damage to the headliner through the hole in the roof
Can someone please enlighten.?
