A V6 is very different than a 4 cylinder. The V6 uses a sleeve that slips onto the crank that the seal runs on. It is possible for oil to seep under this sleeve and leak out at the lower crank sprocket (timing belt gear) By putting sealant on the back of the gear you minimize this issue.
Have fun torquing that crank bolt! (185 ft lbs plus 45 degrees)
