AC and cruise control issues

'04 Arc wagon. On a 5-hour drive in 95- to 100-degree heat, ~70 MPH avg, the cruise control repeatedly disengaged on its own and could not be reset without turning it off and back on. Ordinarily, I'd suspect an issue with one of the inputs that would disengage it, e.g., brake signal, but that wouldn't require powering the CC off. If it's relevant, when I set it to 30 MPH, it surges: gas on for a couple seconds, gas off, gas back on, off, repeatedly. (Yes, I need to set CC this slow at times.)
In addition, the AC quit about 4 hours in. Fan was blowing still, just not cold, so the compressor had stopped working. After a 20-minute stop close to our destination, it worked again. If it's relevant, the system was recently recharged. Prior to quitting, it was blowing cold. We were beyond the hottest part of the trip.
Before I start troubleshooting, I'd be grateful for your thoughts on either issue -- perhaps both are known to seasoned owners.
