Depends how bad it is damaged. It should be a heli-coil in there from the factory. That is why when someone skips the Saab seal ring, (which is thicker than average) the heli-coil gets damaged when the unthreaded top of the drain plug contacts it. So often you can try to remove the damaged heli-coil and just replace it. If they damaged the aluminum a time-sert can be made to work but getting square can be an issue in the car. So then you have to pull the pan and a good used pan can be a good option. Good Luck, Bernie
