Boring straight into cast iron is one of the plusses of cast iron blocks, keeps the cost down. Steel sleeves are used for aluminum engines where the metal is too soft to stand the wear unless much care is taken in applying various layers of wear material, ending with silicon if my memory serves me right. MB does this among others so it can be done successfully. Cast iron is the most economical block but heavy. Dry liners and coated aluminum probably rank next in expense with the coating option being lighter. The best weight/wear trade-off is probably aluminum blocks with wet liners but expense gets in the way here, the sealing and extra parts to assemble should make this the most expensive option.
