Fitting an infant carseat in a 2001 9-5 Wagon

Hi all,
I just installed a rear-facing infant car seat in my 9-5 wagon (the kind with the detachable base that stays in the car) and want to ask some questions to make sure I installed it correctly. I'm actually having the local police department check the installation for me next weekend, but the baby could arrive before then :-)
1. The 2001 9-5 does NOT have LATCH, correct? Before buying the carseat, I read about the lower tethers in my 9-5 owner manual and mistakenly thought they were LATCH. However, now that I have the carseat, I realize those lower tethers must be for carseats for bigger kids. Am I right?
2. Basically all I did was (a) roll-up a towel to place under the base where the seat back meets the seating surface of the car (to prop-up that end of the base and keep it level), (b) place the base on the seat, (c) switch the seatbelt clasp into "child seat" mode, (d) loop the lap part of the seatbelt through the appropriate part of the base, and (e) tighten the crap out of the seatbelt by putting my weight on the base and pulling up on the shoulder part of the seatbelt. Is this really all there is to it?
3. The base does not move side-to-side. However, there is an inch or two range of motion if I move the front part of the base up/down (by front, I mean the part that's closer to the front of the car). The other end of the base does not move up/down at all. Is this OK? I don't see anything in the car seat instructions about securing the front end of the base, but it seems odd that there's so much give at that end.
Thanks for your help!
Marc
