light loaded bearing fails is generally too low preload.

In the discussions and all the material I can read, the failure mode of the 'box seems to be pinion bearing failure. Bearing failure is generally due to FP damage or excessive heat. I would think gear lube could generate more heat than 10w30 but that is another discussion. The failures happen with GL4 or motor oil. If the lightly loaded bearing of the pair fails, it is generally due to too little loading, in my experience. If it was 'too tight' both would see higher load and the loaded one would see even more load - leading to failure failure. If it is too lightly loaded, it will slip against the surface instead of rolling. This will generate more heat and lead to premature failure. This is why SKF et al suggest a radial load on a bearing pair to keep the lightly loaded one of the pair from skidding. Skidding causes more failures than too much preload. It would be best to install the set as per racing 'box assembly procedure with a measured shim instead of a simple crush washer. That works fine in mass production with machine tightening of the nut to a prescribed torque, etc. The bearing mfr could be contacted and we could get a suggested preload. We could figure out an appropriate shim to reach this preload value. This way, clamping torque is much more predictable. When mine start to whine, this will be my route. I have run an electric motor at 200hp through a VW bug ring and pinion in a bug gearbox and have never had a pinion bearing failure. I would also think a recirc pump with a heat exchanger and filter would do a lot to extend the life of these boxes a tremendous amount.
