Somewhere around 200K (16v?) you'll probably end up rebuilding the engine for one reason or another, i.e., seal leaks, corroded mains/cons (don't ask) worn rings, noisy timing chain/worn tensioner/sprockets, etc.

At that time you can replace the head gasket if not sooner. AFAIK, the 85 16v head wasn't as susceptible to corrosion as the later 2.1L heads.

I had my 87 900T 16v engine rebuilt at around 200k, essentially new bearing shells for cons and mains and resealed and new rings (still had OEM honing marks in the cylinders...nice HARD cylinders) and new timing chain/tensioner and assorted other bits. Amazing how quiet the rebuilt engine is. Looking back on it, I should have had the head done/ported and new hp cams and new valve springs installed, but it still seems to run fine right up to the rev limiter @6200.
