I have a '91 900S. The exact same procedure for me as you.
1.Put car up on 4" blocks, just drive up on some wood. This will aid in the crawling underneath of the car, and also puts the rear of the trannny down to help some of the fluid to come out.
2.Crawl under car with a oil pan, various size rachets and open ended wrenches (I forgot what size the bolts are). At the rear of the skid plate in the middle of the car you will see a plate with 8 bolts in it. The plate is located behind the drivers.
3.Loosen the bolts beginning at the top ones. The hardest ones are near the shifter linkage, must use the open ended wrenches for these because of clearance reasons. Once you get to the bottom 3, slightly loosen them about 1/4 inch out being sure to hold the plate from comming off the tranny.
4.Position the pan below the plate and a little to the rear to catch the oil. There will be 3.2Qts. comming out. Then pull slightly on the plate and it will fall out to the screws and there goes the oil. Placing some cloths under the pan would not be a bad idea, since it is quite difficult to get all the oil into the pan with out any splashing around.
5. Then completely remove the plate. On the inside of it, you will see a black plastic piece, remove it from the plate. This is the mesh screen that catches metal floating around in the fluid. Just spray out very very well with carb cleaner and let dry completly. Also on the plate there is a magnet. Take the carb cleaner and spray off all the metal fillings from it. On mine, the meatal was so small, it seemed almost like grease.
6.For the next step, you will need to get a new "transmission rear plate gasket". I got mine from James at http://www.sobstory.com for like $10. I would totally recommend doing this. If you do not, you may have leaks, and/or need to remove the plate again, add new oil again and a gasket. Do it right the first time..... get the gasket.
7.Then put the filter back on the plate, new gasket, and reinstall cover. Do not overtighten bolts though, they could strip which means new tranny casing (very bad thing, and moy $$$)
8.Add the oil in the plug on the pass side of the tranny. (3.2Qts)
9.Have a nice COLD beer, you are done!
An optional process that I did was to do two changings with the same type oil. It not only cleaned things out more, but gave me more piece of mind. Drove for 300 miles before the 2nd change.
I plan on changing it every 25-30k. Pay now or later. Well actually we will all pay later for a tranny in these cars, just depends how long. I used Mobil 1 10w30 in mine. Total time, 1.3hrs/change. Total cost $12 oil for each change. $10 for gasket/last change.
Hope this helps the mind...
