I wired switches in my '86T

I've got an '86 hatchback. In the panel where the window switches live, there are two knock-outs for the rear window switches (used on 4-door cars). I found switches that fit pretty well in there (Radio Shack, IIRC). Just make sure they can take the power (12 volts, and whatever amperage the fuse is for the seats). Mine light up when in use, but this really just tells me there's electricity going through the switch, not necessarily through the seat.

Here's what I did.
Got heavy gauge wire (10 AWG should do). snipped the hot wire under the seat, between where it comes out from under the center console, and where it plugs into the seat.

Spliced in the heavy wire into each end, and routed it up into the window switch knock outs, and plugged it into the new switches. I grounded the switches, too, to make 'em light up (to impress my friends).

Naturally, I wrapped everything in electrical tape for safety.

I took out the seats and pulled back the leather on the seat bottom. I removed the thermostat (small, round button type thing), and replaced it with a jumper.

Under the passenger seat is a thin chain from the seat bottom to the floor. This is the weight sensor (just a plunger switch). I just unhooked the chain, which closes the switch.

It's been this way for close to 10 years, and I'm pretty happy with it. The seats get pretty hot, and I can control them easily (though it's on/off, not the fancy rheostat system the newer 900s have).
