The ignition wiring is very, very simple...You have three wires going off to the magnetic pickup on the distributor, you have one wire going off to the ignition relay (carrying the outbound tachometer pulse), you have one wire going to ground, one wire going to power, and one wire going out to the coil. That's seven, right? Cool. That's it....

The ignition system is almost completely self contained. The magnetic impulse sensor sends a signal to the ignition control unit, and the ignition control unit uses that signal to fire the coil. At the same time, a signal is sent from the control unit to the ignition relay - the ignition relay does *nothing* except tell certain other components (the fuel injection computer, etc.) that the engine is running. From there, the tach signal goes to the tachometer itself...

If you're not getting spark, you have three possibilities:

1. The ignition control unit is bad. Don't overlook this possibility.
2. The coil is bad and not outputting sufficient spark energy.
3. You don't have enough battery voltage to power the electronics or generate spark.

It's pretty much one of these three... You need a multimeter to check the wiring and verify voltages. There is no real test procedure for the ignition control unit that I'm aware of - you need a "known good" unit to swap it out with.

If you have wires dangling around, check to make sure you don't have a short. I can't imagine what would be left over after such a swap - the electronics to drive a b-motor are the same as those for an h-motor... there really shouldn't be anything left disconnected... Maybe spliced or elongated due to different positions of components, but not unused. I'll look in the Haynes manual (it sucks too...) to see if there's anything I've forgotten, but I think that's it.
