Clutch parts run around $200 but I forget if that is with the slave cylinder or not... another $75 I think if not. Whole job is maybe $500-600? I do my own, cannot tell for sure. There will be a standard rate they can quote you. There is an inspection hole on the clutch cover that perhaps someone could look into ( the little plastic square on the big plastic cover... under all that plumbing) and see how the clutch disk looks. My experience has been that the release bearing has gone first... and can get noisy and then smelly. Only happened once, but it left an impression. Shifting deteriorated fairly quickly, over about a day. Some of the grinding sounds more like a slave or master cylinder ($125 range) slowly failing. Slave is up front and replacing it is about as much work as the whole clutch, but master cylinder is easy, just underneath the brake master, with only a couple of connections. Also... has your clutch pedal ever been replaced? That can get slop in it from wear (not the best design) at the pivot point that might lead to SOME of these symptoms. Just speculation there.
