Hey all,
Just thought I would let someone out there share in my SAAB story...

Yesterday, after I had tightened the power steering belt on my '84 900S (had been squealing when revved up with a load on p/s system, during first few minutes of driving only), I started it up, and found no chirp when engine was revved quickly. Success, or so I thought. But, a fast "shwuh-shwuh-shwuh" noise perpetuated, but belt noise was common on both this and my previous 900S, so I thought my problem was appeased, if not corrected.

It was lunchtime by then, so I left my 900S at home and drove my Mom in her 1990 900 to lunch and take in the sights in a different town, about 45 minutes away.

I get back from the trip yesterday evening, and start up my SAAB to go to dinner with my girlfriend. I get about halfway to the restaurant (to meet her there) and, while adjusting my back rest, I hear a faint thud. I THOUGHT it was my seat back at first, but it sounded like the noise came from the firewall.

Uh oh, I thought. Power steering belt must've come off. Sure enough, the next low speed turn came and I noticed that there was no power assist to my steering! Great.

So, I drive on to the restaurant, about 5 minutes away (no alternator charging light came on and temp stayed at 1/2, so I suspected other belts were OK).

I hop out, look chagrined (g/f and her pals standing in parking lot waiting on me) and pop the hood, after having her send the pals inside to procure a table.

The p/s belt HAD come off (nearly broken in two and unsalvageable, so I cut it off rather than having to take time to remove a/c belt to get it off "properly"). I go around the other side of the car to have a second look and noticed that the alternator/H2O pump had one belt missing!

I was glad to notice that the second alt. belt was present and intact, thank God!

[I know what you're thinking: "this guy had never changed the belts!" NOT TRUE! I had just put all new belts on this past winter (after just buying the car in Nov. 2001).]

They are Contitech belts made by Continental. However, they had been sitting, in their sleeves, new and unused, in my previous 900S (1984, too) which is now my parts car. I had been meaning to put these belts on for about 1 year, then that first 900s was totaled, and the belts sat in that 900S, parked outdoors but sealed for another year, until I bought my "new" '84 900S in Nov. The total exposure to temp. extremes was about 2 or 2 1/2 years. My only explanation is that the belts were dry rotted. Any ideas?

So, that's why I'm really still loving my SAAB, as always, despite a bit of hardship! The 2-belt system on the essential belt-driven components got me home, safe and sound. Just thought that y'all might want to hear some good-bad SAAB news.
