I would call this another urban legend. Think logically, if it would be so easy to improve the detergent qualities of oil then why wouldn't the oil companies add the appropriate amount of ATF to regular oil? Story does not make sense.

Reminds me of a classmate in college (when That 70's Show was real time)whose wealthy parents gave him a new FIAT 124 convertible just for getting into our poison ivy league level school. Just before Thanksgiving break he swore that with each oil change he would pour 3 quarts of kerosene and 1 quart of oil in the engine and run it a few miles to "clean out the crap" in the engine, then drain and refill with fresh oil. He came back from the break with new Camaro, the FIAT having blown an engine and he didn't want to talk about it.

Maybe the kerosene didn't hurt and the FIAT was a bad candidate for the theory because it would not hesitate to blow up anyway. But all my cars have run on Quaker State 10w40 and factory (VW for years, then SAAB) filters changed at 4,000 to 5,000 miles and I have never done a valve job or opened a motor on five cars and 600,000 plus aggregate miles since college. Now using Mobil 1 in my 97 9000 due to the turbo.

Do we really think that backyard mechanics can beat professional engineers working for big companies with a profit motive in free and competitive markets??
