That you get a backfire when it dies suggests that the fuel system is operating and indicates a spark generating problem. With a hot running engine and some fuel saturating the intake/combustion chambers for that brief period of time before the pump shuts off, fuel can ignite without spark. The spark failure could be any number of places. I too have a vintage 82 900T. I've found several elec/ignition failures. One was the wiring to the distributor body, that plug specifically. I just cleaned the connections with a solvent and haven't had a problem since. Then there was the turbo pressure fuel pump shut off circuit that developed a short in the main plug between the fuse box and car interior (just to the left of your left knee while driving). I bypassed it to solve that problem. With a car of that year, there's also plenty of wires that can become weakened at the connections, and the relay plug/sockets. The other problem is the wiring harness internal insulation flaking and developing a short. Then there's the ignition console wiring, which runs right over the catalytic convertor. If the cat is in need of replacement or the heat shield is rusting away, heat builds up and can melt the wiring insulation, causing a short at best, or a fire at worst. If your ignition wiring insulation is indeed melting away, consider yourself lucky the engine merely quits. To check that wiring you'll have to remove the front seats and pull the carpeting out.
