hear the tranny shifts nice. Find out what tranny fluid the car has in it. What has been repaired on the car? On fluid changes, I'm going to run Mobil 1 Synthetic with a 5k oil and filter change and have oil analysis done and Honda MTF for tranny with 30k change. There is tons of info on BB on fluids so check that out. On the idle, if it's steady your fine. Just let it idle for a few minutes. When the fans turn on it can make it change which is normal. Yes, the turbo does have a nice sound doesn't it? You can take care of the rust. Inspect the control arms that support the front wheels for small cracks. Use a flashlight. The cracks will grow gradually so you can catch it in time. I got one control arm at wreck yard for jsut $20.00. 170K things wear out. You can search on the BB for all kinds of great info and there are a lot of people who know much more than I do.

On my car I put on 17x7.5 RT rims form Ronal. The wider low profile tires are tons better than the stock tire that wobbles on the turns. Also I put on Koni adj shocks with stiffer heavy load springs in rear which really improved handling. On the '91 turbo engine with 82K miles I called all the auto wreckers in Oregon/Wash area. The one I found was on the internet and it was a Saab shop and the guy was thinking of putting the engine in his SPG. He said that it was in good shape and that the tranny was perfect when they pulled that out. The guy wasn't pushing the sale at all and I felt like I could trust him and he said call him if there were any problems. Your engine sounds like it may have been well cared for and may last well into the 300K range! Did you say they want $1000.00 for it? I dont know what the top speed will be yet on mine. Get a Bentley Workbook Manual. Use wreck yards to save money. You can lock down the motorized seatbelts if they are failing or get some reg belts from a wreck yard to put in. The '88s and on have the water cooled turbo and the better Saab 9000 breaks. I like that year because you don't have the extra weight and expense of the air bags and ABS. I've had mine for about 5 years and it makes me really happy. I figure it's a lot cheaper than buying a newer car and it is something unique and different and Saab owners are really cool people. If you get it, welcome to the family. Have fun! Also these cars are built like tanks so it will save your life if you get into an accident. Saabs are safe like Volvos but are more fun to drive and have more personality.

Best, KB
