the x-shift poster guy is primarily talking about *pausing* between gears to allow the gear speeds to equalize: when everything is moving at the same speed, you don't rely on the synchros to match the speed for you, hence preserving them. learning how to properly time your shifts is certainly helpful, but the diagonal shift pattern is no more harmful than an "h" pattern: shifting with an h or x pattern with a pause in neutral achieves the same thing. it's the *pause* between shifts, not the motion you choose to use to get from one gear to the next.

Regarding the final sentence: "The moral of the story, if any of you guys are "X-shifters", plan on a new tranny. All of you "H" shifters, start thinking about modifying your car for 300HP, after all, you can afford it now that you know you won't have to buy a new tranny anytime soon!"

This is nonsense. c900 gearboxes usually fail because of the *pinion bearing*, which is completely unaffected by shift technique. If you think that the geometric shape of your shift motion will preserve a gearbox mated to a 300 hp motor (hard to believe those numbers, btw; search c900 dyno info on the performance board), then i will give you a nickel for each piece of gearbox shard sitting in a pool of oil in the bottom of your soon-to-be destroyed gearbox.
