First, don't downshift at high rpms. Great way to wear a tranny. Breaks.
1) First check your dipstick. Smell what is in there. If it really stinks (really) it is gear lube and I would hesitate switching from thick (gear lube) to thin (Honda MTF). If it's just regular engine oil then go ahead. Maybe it's just me, but anytime you change tranny fluid types on a C900 you should also begin a tranny specific savings account. MHO.
2) Independant Saab mechanic. A mechanic that mainly knows Saabs who has experiences with the unique ways of our cars. Not just an "import car" mechanic. Ask around, stop in (look for Saabs) or call various mechanics in your area.
3) Depending on your location a tranny rebuild (5 speed) can be as little as $1500 (engine removal, pinion bearings replaced, reinstallation) or as much as $3000 (if replaced with 'new' or specialty rebuilt). More expensive as more parts are needed. Everyone's got an opinion, but with 210K and unknown history I would figure out what is in your tranny and replace it with the same potion.
Good luck.
