Tranny Core Inspection Q - Anders? GregD? Others?

I found a tranny core for cheap. I'm going to go check it out but don't know how to evaluate its condition.
How can I tell if it's not rebuildable?
What are the telltale signs that it was treated well? Abused?
What are the typical wear indicators that I *shouldn't* worry about (I assume every tranny will have a crappy reverse gear)?
Should I bring any precision measuring tools? If so, what do I measure?
Someone told me that there is one major component in the gearbox that, if needing replacement, makes the cost considerably higher (I can't recall what it's called - maybe the layshaft??) -- how do i inspect this?
My gearbox is starting to whine a bit (first it happened only in 4th/5th, then, one day, it stopped whining in those gears and now only does it in 2nd/3rd for some reason...)
Anyway, thanks for your advice...
