A crunch like you have to force it a bit?
I wonder if the same syncromesh sleeves were reused. These have pointed teeth that engage alike teeth on the appropriate gear, and their purpose is to force a small relative rotation between the sleeve and the gear to bring them into perfect alignment. The teeth are supposed to be sharp. If blunt, the sleeve and the gear tend to hang up on one another, requiring more force (or clutch slipping) to get things into alignment.
My wild guess is that the old synchro rings were used and installed in a different gear pair or with orientatio reversed so that the blund side now confronts second gear, while it didn't before. Or maybe the rebuilder used a different used synchroring from who knows where.
I reused mine, but I also filed them sharp after I realized that their slight bluntness made shifting difficult.
If this is what's going on, it won't fix itself. You might be able to compensate by feathering your shifting habits, if you can guess what I mean.
Good luck.
