The slop that you sense could be broken or deteriorated motor mount.
Or it could be the combination of wear in the drive train, with most of that likely in the inner driver and possibly in the differential. As jcb suggests, if your pinion bearing is going, you will have whine or shifting difficulties.
Try jacking up one front wheel, with all others chocked, ease the parking brake off but leave it in gear. Rotate the wheel back and forth - the play is most likely due to slop down drive from the pinion gear. Note that I've voicing the opinion (hoping for rebuttal!) that by gently hand turning the road wheel, that you are unlikely to cause the pinion gear (and therefore the transmission) to turn.
