What do you mean by smaller? Does that mean shorter? If so, that would answer my initial question if there are differences in length between inner drivers from year to year. Specifically, about my right side 82T drive axle coupled with an 86 inner driver. Since I only checked the right side, I'll look to see what the left side looks like in terms of t-bearing placement in the inner driver cup. I'm also heading to a J-yard this afternoon and I'll do some more measuring there.

I can see how it would be important for the t-bearing to be set within the id cup for optimum drive torque. Just last week I saw a scrap 86 T 900 with a shattered inner driver. Ripped to shreds. I can only imagine the moment when that blew apart. Perhaps it was just one of those things, like one too many popped clutch moments on an aging car driven by a teenager, or a mismatched axle and inner driver.
