Some random ideas to check...

Adam,
Since this 900S had been sitting, did you replace the fuel filter? I'd do that first thing. My Mom's 1990 had a clogged filter which killed the fuel pump at only 70,000 miles. Could be the culprit, but that is just mainly an "insurance" type of maintenance item. I suspect the items below, really:
Another couple of things, and one of these may actually be the problem:
1) Your TPS (throttle position sensor) might have a bad contact for the idle position. It is mounted on the side of the throttle body and is a black box. (SEE LINK.) The 16V Bentley manual (I think) will have proper ohm readings for testing your TPS and seeing if its up to spec. If you don't have a Bentley, I can email you the numbers, if needed. I am sure the 1992 Chilton Car Care manual--which covers many cars--has this info, though, and I've got one at home. It has numbers for the 1991-92 non-turbo 900s (1993 should be same), which have a continuous ohm reading change, due to the LH 2.4.2 system using a throttle position sensor, not a idle/full throttle switch. By sensor, I mean potentiometer.
2) Your AIC (Automatic Idle Control or Adaptive Idle Control) valve, the "idle motor," may be going bad. Also, you might want to check the wiring to the motor. My Mom's '90 also had a problem with strange idling (high idle at times). Turned out to be a broken wire to the AIC, beneath the rubber connector plug's boot where is was hidden! I had to splice in a new connector plug to fix it--I just happened to have a Bosch-type generic fuel injector replacement plug that I'd bought at a small garage for just this purpose.
As you said, vacuum leaks are not a bad maintenance item to check for, either. Check vacuum hoses, grommets, and don't forget the ones to the charcoal canister behind left headlight and to the HVAC vacuum reservoir canister, just in front of right front door hinge in fenderwell.
Hope this helps!

See the last photo on this page, item #5 is TPS on a 1990 900, yours will look similar.
