i recently took apart four front wheel assemblies and noticed that once the drive axles were out, 3 of them had highly visible play in the bearing assembly, one didn't, when grasping the wheel studs and testing.
i assume that if the drive axle is still in the splined hub (while in the car that is), that could reduce or eliminate the amount of play in the bearing that you feel.
also, to add to other's comments, i believe a good bearing will not spin very much when hand-spun, indicating good contact between bearing and race, plus lots of lube. if a bearing spins longer, and makes any sort of noise, it's probably shot or just worn.
i bought 4 new wheel bearing assemblies from eEuroparts and used a buddy's press to install them. NOT an easy job at all, so make sure you have a good machine shop do it, and discuss the procedure with them before-hand.
Don't know if you are aware of this, but some recommend putting loktite REd between the outer bearing race and the spindle to eliminate the bearing shifting in the spindle while backing up with the wheel turned sharply.
there was a service bulletin issued on this by Saab, they recommended if the custome complained of this noise, pulling the old bearing and installing a new one, then shimming between the circlip and the bearing to eliminate any slack.
