JW,

Hi. I am very sorry to hear about your loss of the '84S hatch. (I know how you feel--this happened to me in 2000 with my '84, also a 3-dr.)

On your oil pressure light, sure, it could be a faulty pump, I suppose. You would need to remove the oil pressure switch (unscrew it) and thread in an appropriately thread-adapted oil pressure guage to check it. The SAAB manual might have oil press. specs at, say, idle and 3000 rpm or so, but I'm not sure. I have other manuals which have more info; email me if you need the numbers.

The culprit might have nothing to do with your oil pump: it COULD be that the wire to your oil pressure switch is shorting out on the intake manifold, oil filter housing, alternator, etc. causing the oil pressure lamp's circuit to complete (all the low pressure switch does is provide a ground when oil pressure is about 10 psi or below). Check to see if the wire is chafed and showing bare wire strands through the insulation. Wrap with electrical tape to "fix" it (and reroute wire, if possible, to location away from chafe point to prevent reoccurrence of short circuit).

Also, since I'm on a roll...with my current '84S (I got another one!) I notice low oil pressure light flashes when I suddenly stop with oil levels of 1/4 or below on the dipstick. If your oil level is on the lower half of the stick, top it up and see if that helps.
