Here's my roundabout answer, since I don't have a definitive one. I do know that the splined stub axle which slides through the hub and bolted on with an axle nut is the same for the years up through at least 91. I've successfully transplanted a 91 cv/axle assembly onto my 82 T 8V with 87 hub and calipers. The 91 inner drivers also had to be included. Here's where it get's tricky for your situation - it's not possible to attach the old (pre 88) smaller tripod bearing onto a post 88 axle because the splined part of the post 88 axle is larger. That may also be the case at the CV end, but the reverse since you're transplanting the old axle onto the newer CV. The axle may not be large enough. You'll know right away. It's either a snug fit or it's not.

As far as the longer axle issue - the left and right sides are different lengths, so perhaps you were sent the opposite of what you asked. It is also my understanding that the axle lengths (left and right respective) are the same for the early and late years. It's the matching year inner drivers which vary in length to account for the different brake/hub configurations.
