How to test A/C fan relay? Posted by Baab [Email] [Profile/Gallery]

When I got everything back together after installing a new front motor mount on my '86 900S I noticed that the A/C fan (left-side fan) was not running when turning the A/C on.
I tested the fan by jumpering it to the battery and it runs OK, maybe a bit on the noisy side. A test light shows no power going to the fan when the air conditioner is turned on.
There is a relay just for this fan ("J"), what pins would I jumper across to see if the fan turns on? (The pin numbers on the relay do not match the numbers given in the Bentley wiring diagram!)
The relay pins are arranged thusly, looking at the relay from the bottom:
+------------+
| --- 5 |
| | | |
| 1| --- 4 |2|
| | |
| | 3 |
+------------+
(Bentley shows pins "30" and "87" actually operate the fan.)
There does not seem to be a separate fuse for this fan as far as I can tell, so I figure the problem must be either in the relay or the associated wiring.
