OK, that was engine transplant #1, which was an 88. The problem ended up being a timing issue and nothing to do with the fuel. I eventually started that engine and the results were frightening with serious oil burning and one cylinder misfiring. Obviously a bad engine. Reason for me choosing that 88 with high miles in the first place was I had no choice - I had just a small window of opportunity to do the job and little choice of engines. My frustration at failing with that first engine made me determined to do it right, so I managed to extend that window of opportunity and was extremely lucky to find an 86T auto donor engine with 60K miles (verified by calling previous owner after finding the registration in the glove box) plus a proper workspace to do it in. I mated the 86 block with the 88 tranny and dropped it in my car with little effort (much easier the second time). That engine started right up. The only adjustments I had to make were the fuel air mix and idle settings. Bonus was resurfacing the flywheel and dropping in a new clutch. The car now starts, warms up, idles and runs better than ever. Lots more power over the previous 8V. My only fear is the smog test due at the end of the year. No telling what will turn up. On the performance board a few weeks back I posted some pics of the CIS fuel injector to LH manifold modification. Included in those posts are more details about the transplant.
