only thing i've ever seen is clogged exhaust blades due to exhaust seal leak. also, housing on exhaust side can crack at the fork - check that.

impeller blades should be a grey or dark grey due to crankcase fumes coming back into the turbo intake side.
exhaust blades should be a light brown, not black.
make sure you get the correct lower rad hose- it has two connections for water cooling the turbo.
end play of the shaft is longitudinal axis. if exhaust side is ok, lateral play is normal as shaft floats on oil.
anyway, like i say do a search. there are many experts around.
