It's a bike I bought used from a repair shop years ago. I didn't recognize what it was at first because the p.o. had repainted it and didn't put any decal or markings on it. I recognized the components though, a mix of mostly mid 70's French - Normandy hubs, Atom quick release, Rigida rims for 700 x 23 tires, Stronglight crank and chainwheel, plastic/metal Huret deraileurs, Ideal seat, Mafac racer brakes. The only French made bike of that era I was familiar with was the Peugeot UO8 and PX10 variants, but this bike was definitely not Peugeot. Logic suggests it must be a Motobecane. Regardless, it was exactly the kind of road bike I was looking for - a sturdy, light (24 lbs, probably a Reynolds frame), reliable, no-nonsense piece of vintage history to fix up and ride for fun and excersize. The restoration began years ago by replacing the rusted spokes with stainless, polishing up the metal components and relubing the bearing sets. Then I rode it daily for an entire summer doing my own time trial routes along mostly uncongested bike paths along the LA coast. Then I moved and it went into storage because where I live now has to be among the worst areas for road biking. Every direction you go has a 3 mile 7 degree climb waiting for you. In the two years it sat in storage the tires basically disintegrated and rust returned to various parts. So that's what I dealt with while the car sat on the ramps after the PS fluid leak repair, the raised front bumper used as a shelf for bike tools and parts. I'm not restoring it to mint condition just yet. This was more like a tune-up restoration just to be able to ride. What's nice about this C900 4 door is I can fit the bike into the back seat after removing the front wheel. I let the car climb the 3 miles. The continuum respects that arrangement. Besides, what fun is it to disable a driver who has an alternate means of transportation in the back seat?
