92 motor woes

Well, as the odometer rolls over 200Kmi, the lifters are more vocal than ever, and the deep knocking or thumping noise from deep within the bottom end which has existed for over 120Kmi is everpresent on my 1992 900S. I am weighing my options in an attempt to avoid being stranded on the side of I70 on the way to Breckenridge, CO. Is a used low-mile motor the best route, or is is fiesable to do a little massaging of my existing mill. I understand these motors are inherently weak out of the box, but the thing refuses to use any oil whatsoever over the course of 3500 miles, and is still just as strong as my mother's 90 900S with 45Kmi. It's just the noise that troubles (and embaresses)me. -to the point of turning on the AC at stop lights to disguise the noise coming from my car.

if you have encountered this situation, let me know how you deallt with it. I would appreciate it. A new car payment and astronoomical insurance premiums just don't make sense when I already own a car that looks great and is not another cookie cutter econo box.
