Replacing a caliper is not a big deal. You will have to bleed the system after you pull the caliper off, because no matter how hard you try, you'll get some air into the system. You can buy or borrow a bleeder, or check the archives for manual methods.

You can buy a rebuild kit for calipers, typically around $15-$20. Frankly, I don't bother doing that myself. Sometimes it works, and sometimes the caliper is so grunged up that it'll take significant cleaning/refinishing. I usually just pick up a rebuilt caliper at my local autoparts store. Last time I did it, I think it was about $85 for a rebuilt caliper. No need for a new one, and the rebuild houses can do a much better job. Doing your own brakes is a very good thing to do; much cheaper than the shop.

If I were in your position, I'd buy a rebuilt caliper and a new set of pads (about $125), and find a brake bleeder, like a Mitty Vac, for about $40-$50. Yes, that's $175, but not only is it half the price of the shop, you now have a nice brake bleeder tool for your very own. With that, you can do brake flushes, something that should be done every 2 years or so, and save $$ every time you do it over the shop.
