townsendimports fix...sort of Posted by michael [Email] (#1365) [Profile/Gallery] (more from michael) on Mon, 10 Jan 2005 16:07:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
so i attempted the reverse fix on townsendimports, since mine was just grinding. did everything, and after some trouble finally got it back together--sort of. i couldn't get everything back together correctly with the arm reversed, so i put it back the original way, and now i have reverse, and don't know why. the shifter seems to physically move farther into reverse than before. a couple of weird things:
1. looks like there was redline fluid in the box; i lost about a quart of fluid during the swap and haven't replaced yet. wondering if the greater friction is helping reverse stick.
2. reverse actually seemed to engage farther in the original configuration. the more i looked at it, the less it looked like the fix should work; on my car, the thick lip of the idler arm was facing forward. it seems that flipping the arm would result in less travel of the gear, and a worsening of the problem. check out http://68.155.254.181/transmission_folder/reverse_gear_mod.htm for an idea of what i'm talking about.
3. i'm sure this is been discussed ad nauseum, but what is the consensus of tranny oil v. motor oil? since saab recommends motor oil, i'm thinking i should switch it.
thanks,
-michael
